Quick Thinking By SUV Owner During Attempted Carjacking

This is almost routine for this couple in the Range Rover! Incredible how quickly they get to safety..

9NEWS: Anelle Hills and her husband Roger had just pulled up in the driveway of their home in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Sunday when the hijackers struck.

In CCTV she shared to Facebook, Ms Hills can be seen getting out of the passenger side of their white Range Rover when a Gold C-Class Mercedes pulls up behind them.

As one of the hijacker leaps out of the car with a gun, Ms Hills immediately jumps back in the car and shuts the door.

Mr. Hills floors the car in reverse, barreling backwards down the street.

The carjackers scrambled back in the car and attempted to give chase, but were not able to catch up to the couple.

“God's Protection is amazing!!” Ms Hills wrote in the post, adding: “Roger's quick thinking got us away quickly and safely!”

There are about 14,000 carjackings every year in South Africa, or about 40 a day, and the numbers are rising. Carjackings are linked to organised crime and often have very violent endings.

In May, in a case that shocked the country, a young student was raped, stabbed and then strangled to death in a brutal carjacking in South Africa's Western Cape province.
