Girl Scout Troops Say They Received Fake Cash While Selling Cookies

BRANDON, Fla. (CBS 12) —Multiple Girl Scout troops in Bradenton say they received counterfeit money while selling cookies, according to WFTS in Tampa.

The Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida say they lost at least $650 because of it.

A representative from the organization told WFTS that the troops realized the cash was fake when taking the money to the bank.

"The tellers are telling them, you're short $80, you're short $100 and the leaders are saying, 'No it's in the stack.' Well, the machines at the bank are counting the real money so that's how they are finding out," Kelly McGraw said.

McGraw said troops will now use counterfeit pens so they can be on the lookout for fake money.
