Florida Beer Used Butterflies For The Brewing Process

The New Frosten Elfin New England Style Session Pale Ale had a special helper during its brewing process - butterflies! But don't worry, no butterflies were harmed during the making of this beer!

This new local Florida beer was created at Gainesville's First Magnitude Brewing.

The brewery teamed up with scientists at the Florida Museum of Natural History who helped catch the butterflies. The tiny brown butterflies from central Florida were netted and gently swabbed for yeast before being safely released back into the forest.

The pale ale has a tropical, fruity, hoppy taste that only occurred from the flowery-smelling yeast the butterflies offered. The beer is now available for purchase at First Magnitude's Tasting Room and other stores around Gainesville.

The beer will cost you about $12.50 for a 4-Pack, but a portion of the proceeds are going directly to further butterfly research.

Yeast from plants has been collected for beer brewing in the past, but this was the first time it came directly from an insect.

What do you think? Do you want to try this new brew?
